The Shelly DALI Dimmer Gen3 (model S3DM-0A1WW) is an excellent unit for what it's designed to do, but it's often bought expecting something it doesn't do.
We'd rather say it before the purchase: it's a gateway between the Shelly ecosystem and a DALI bus, not a full DALI controller.
What it does and what it doesn't
In DALI terminology it's a single-master application controller that works with LED control gear (Part 207). It sends its commands by broadcast, that is, to the whole bus at once.
The practical consequence: all the connected drivers behave as a single group. You can't create groups, or set one fixture to 100 % and another to 30 %.
This clashes with what many people expect, because individual addressing is precisely DALI's star feature. If your project needs it, this unit isn't the solution.
The other two limits
Maximum 5 drivers without an external supply
It includes its own bus power supply of 16 V and 10 mA, enough for about 5 units. Above that figure you need an external bus power supply.
Brightness only, not color
It supports DT6, which is light-intensity control. It doesn't dim color temperature, so with tunable-white fixtures you'll be able to raise and lower the light, but not change the tone.
Where it really is a great option
If what you want is to bring an existing DALI installation into the Shelly ecosystem, it does the job very well:
- Control from the app, by voice or from Home Assistant via MQTT
- Schedules, scenes and night mode
- Minimum and maximum brightness to bound the useful range
- Inputs for one or two push-buttons
- mJS scripting with no external server
- Extending a KNX installation with a DALI circuit
For a meeting room, an office hallway or a retail area that's dimmed as a whole, it solves the problem at a price far below a professional DALI controller.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use two if I need two groups?
Yes, and it's the usual solution: each unit controls its own bus as an independent group. It's simpler than trying to split a single bus.
How do I know if my fixtures are DALI?
The driver will have two terminals marked DA or the DALI logo, in addition to the power ones. If it says Dim+ and Dim−, it's 0-10 V and you need the Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3.
Does the bus polarity matter?
The DALI bus has no polarity. Even so, always follow your drivers' manual.
Does it measure consumption?
No. If you need measurement, the only Shelly dimmer that includes it is the 0/1-10V PM Gen3.
Can I mix it with other DALI controllers on the same bus?
No. It's a single-master controller and it's not intended to share the bus with other DALI control devices.
