If you've just installed a Shelly BLU Wall Switch 4 and run into this — the four buttons appear in the app, when you press you see a little hand with the click you made, but there's no option to assign an action to the button, and the scenes you create do nothing — you're not doing anything wrong out of clumsiness. It's the most common confusion with this unit, and it has a specific cause.
Let's take the two problems separately, because they almost always come together.
Why the button runs nothing

The BLU Wall Switch 4 is a Bluetooth-only remote. It has no Wi-Fi. When you press a button, it broadcasts a Bluetooth signal into the air and there its job ends: it doesn't "do" anything by itself, it only announces that you've pressed it.
For that press to turn on a light or lower a blind, you need something that listens to that signal permanently and turns it into a command. That's the gateway, and it's the piece that's almost always missing.
Here's the trap: when you have the app open and your phone nearby, the phone itself acts as an occasional listener. That's why you see the little hand with the click on the screen and think everything's fine. But as soon as you close the app or move away, there's no one listening anymore, and the press is lost. That's why the scene "sometimes" seems to work and almost always doesn't.
What works as a gateway
Either of these two options, with the Bluetooth gateway function enabled:
- A Shelly BLU Gateway, the small USB dongle designed for exactly this.
- Or any networked Shelly with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that isn't a sensor: a 1 Mini Gen3, a 2PM Gen3, a Dimmer Gen3... If you already have one installed at home, you probably just need to enable its gateway function.
If you have no networked Shelly and only bought the remotes, this is why nothing works: the receiver is missing. It's the fact we'd rather you knew as soon as possible.
Where the action is actually assigned

This is the second stumble, and it's by the app's design: the action isn't assigned on the button. On the device page you'll only see the status — the battery, the "last reporter" and the last click with its dots — but there's nowhere there to say "this button turns on this light". That's why you look for it and it doesn't appear: it's not there.
The action is created in a scene, with this structure:
- Condition (IF): button X of the BLU Wall Switch receives a press of type Y (single, double, triple or long).
- Action (THEN): device Z does whatever you want (turn on, off, up, down...).
Each button supports four press types, so across the four buttons you have up to 16 possible actions. You don't need to create them all: make one scene for each action you'll actually use.
Step by step in the app

All this is done in the Shelly Smart Control app (Bluetooth devices can't be configured from the web, only from the phone):
- Have the gateway ready. A networked Shelly added to your account with the Bluetooth gateway function enabled. Without this, the following steps are useless.
- Add the BLU Wall Switch. Tap the "+", "Add device", and when prompted press a button on the switch so it appears in the list.
- Go to Scenes and create a new one. Don't look for it on the button's page: it's a separate section.
- Set the button as the condition: choose the BLU Wall Switch, the specific button and the press type.
- Set what should happen as the action: the device to control and the command.
- Save and test by pressing the physical button. If nothing happens, it's almost always the gateway: check it's online and with Bluetooth enabled.
And the remote that won't respond

About the one where only one of the two works: before writing it off as faulty, four quick checks.
- The battery. It comes with a CR2032 included, but it may have a plastic tab to remove, or have arrived flat after months in storage. Try a new branded CR2032. Note: it doesn't accept rechargeable batteries.
- Factory reset. Right after inserting the battery, press and hold any button for 30 seconds. It returns to factory values and you can re-pair it from scratch.
- The range. This unit's Bluetooth reaches about 10 m indoors. To rule it out, bring it close to the gateway and test there.
- The "last reporter". On the device page, check whether the battery percentage and the "last reporter" appear. If they do, the remote is broadcasting fine and the problem is the scene or the gateway, not the unit.
That last check is the one that saves you a wrong return: if the page shows battery and reporter, the switch is healthy. If it shows nothing even brought close to the gateway with a new battery, then it does make sense to file the warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the BLU Wall Switch without any other Shelly?
For it to run actions in your home, no. It needs a gateway: the BLU Gateway or any networked Shelly that isn't a sensor. The remote on its own broadcasts the signal, but no one picks it up.
Why do I see the click in the app but nothing happens?
Because the phone, with the app open and nearby, catches the signal momentarily and shows it to you. But it's not a permanent gateway: as soon as you close the app or move away, it stops listening. You need a networked Shelly acting as a fixed gateway.
I've created the scene and it still doesn't work, what do I check?
In order: that the gateway is online with the Bluetooth gateway enabled; that the condition uses the correct press type (if the scene expects "double" and you press once, it won't trigger); and that the action's device is connected. The number-one cause, by far, is that there's no gateway.
How many different actions can I program?
Up to 16: four buttons times four press types (single, double, triple and long). Each one is an independent scene.
Does a rechargeable battery help extend the life?
No. The manufacturer expressly states not to use rechargeables. With a quality lithium CR2032, the battery life is around two years.
Can I configure it from the computer?
No. Shelly's Bluetooth devices are only configured from the Shelly Smart Control mobile app, not from the web. It's a limitation of the platform itself.
Can my gateway serve several BLU Wall Switches at once?
Yes. A single gateway can pick up the signals of several BLU remotes within its range. If the house is large or has thick walls, distribute a few more networked Shelly devices to cover it well.
