The Shelly Pro 3EM includes features that don't exist on single-phase meters, and that generates specific questions. These are the ones we get most often at support.
The phase-sequence error
It's the warning that scares people most and that the fewest understand. The unit checks the order in which the three voltages cross zero.

The normal sequence is A → B → C. If the unit detects A → C → B, it reports a phase_sequence error.
In practice it almost always means there are two phases swapped in the panel. Check that each phase is on its terminal (A, B, C) and that each clamp measures its corresponding phase. The detection is optional and is enabled from the settings.
It's a relevant warning: in installations with three-phase motors, a reversed sequence makes them run backwards.
The two thresholds that confuse people

They're different things and get mixed up constantly:
- 30 VA per channel is the minimum-load threshold. Below it, the unit shows the power but doesn't accumulate energy in the statistics, and the No load threshold warning appears. It's there so electrical noise doesn't clutter the data.
- 500 W per channel is the minimum load you need connected to be able to run the channel-by-channel calibration. It has nothing to do with normal measurement.
Frequently asked questions
It doesn't accumulate energy with the house nearly off, is it broken?
No. It's the intended behavior below 30 VA per channel. If you see the warning with the installation practically idle, the unit is working correctly.
Why won't it start if I disconnect one phase?
Because phase C is the one that powers the unit, as well as being one of the measured phases. Without voltage on C, the meter won't work.
Do I need the fourth neutral clamp?
It's optional and not included. It only adds value if you're interested in monitoring the neutral current, which is relevant in very unbalanced installations or ones with a lot of non-linear load.
Can it cut the power or switch on a load?
Not on its own: it has no built-in relay. You need the Shelly Pro 3EM Switch Add-on. Note that the add-on interface is at high voltage while the unit is powered: always connect it with the power off.
One phase gives negative power and I have no solar panels
Almost certainly that clamp is fitted the wrong way round, or it's measuring a different phase from the one it should. Check the direction of the arrow (K towards L) and the match between clamp and terminal.
Can I use it on a single-phase installation?
Yes. Shelly's documentation allows single-phase wiring, although if you only have one phase you're probably better off with a Pro EM-50.
How much history does it really store?
The datasheet specifies at least 45 days at one-minute resolution. It's the shortest history in the meter range, something to bear in mind if you need long series. You can export to CSV and JSON.
Up to what current does it measure accurately?
1% between 2 and 120 A, 2% between 1 and 2 A, and 5% below 1 A. At very small loads the relative margin grows, as with any clamp meter.
Is it worth enabling Matter?
If you use a compatible smart-home ecosystem, yes: it's the only Shelly meter with Matter. If you're going to integrate it into Home Assistant, MQTT will give you more control over the data.
The three clamps don't fit in my panel
It's a real problem: the 120 A clamps are bulky. The alternative is the Pro 3EM-3CT63, with a combined clamp that mounts over the breaker, in exchange for lowering the limit to 63 A.
