Setting Up and Using the Shelly i3 and Shelly 1 for Home Automation

The Shelly i3 is a versatile tool that lets you control one or more Shelly 1 devices using a series of URL commands. Below, we show you how to set it up to make the most of it in your home-automation system.

Before installing or mounting the device, make sure the mains power is off (switch off the breakers).

Setting up the Shelly i3

Physical installation:

• Connect the Shelly i3 to the 220V supply at the L and N terminals.
• Connect the switches/push-buttons to the SW1, SW2 and SW3 terminals as needed.

Setup in the Shelly app:

1. Add the Shelly i3 to your Wi-Fi network using the Shelly app.
2. Give it an identifiable name (for example, "Light Control").

Setting up the Shelly 1

Physical installation:

• Connect the 220V supply to the L and N terminals of the Shelly 1.
• Connect the load (for example, the pool light) to the O and N terminals.
• Connect the I terminal to the live (L).

Setup in the Shelly app:

• Download the Shelly app on your mobile device.
• Add the Shelly 1 to your Wi-Fi network following the app's instructions.
• Give it an identifiable name (for example, "Pool Light").

Setting up Actions on the Shelly i3

Look in the app details for the IP assigned to the Shelly Plus 1

The Shelly i3 can send commands to other Shelly devices via URL endpoints. All the action URLs can be found in the Shelly API documentation.

Action Types

• Button Switched ON: Sends a command to a URL when the button is on. Works only when the button is set as Toggle.
• Button Switched OFF: Sends a command to a URL when the button is off. Works only when the button is set as Toggle.
• Button Short Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is pressed once. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.
• Button Long Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is held down. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.
• Button 2x Short Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is pressed twice. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.
• Button 3x Short Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is pressed three times. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.
• Button Short + Long Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is pressed once and then held down. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.
• Button Long + Short Press: Sends a command to a URL when the button is held down and then pressed again. Works only when the button is set as Momentary.

Button Configuration

Button Type:

• Momentary: To use a momentary push-button.
• Toggle Switch: To use a toggle switch.
• Reverse Inputs: Reverses the on/off positions of the button.

Longpush Duration:

• Min: Minimum time the button must be held to trigger the long-press command. Range (in ms): 100-3000.
• Max: Maximum time the button must be held to trigger the long-press command. Range (in ms): 200-6000.

• Multipush: Maximum time between presses to trigger a multipush action. Range: 100-1000 ms.

Example Setup to Control a Shelly 1

Open the Shelly i3 settings:

• In the Shelly app, select the Shelly i3.
• Go to Settings and then to Actions.

Configure Actions:

To turn on a Shelly 1	To turn off a Shelly 1, set up an action at the URL:
