Four-button Shelly BLU Wall Switch 4 with Bluetooth waves and a phone showing an alert, on a dark background

The app won't add the BLU Wall Switch 4: the button won't respond when pairing

A question that comes up often: «the app recognizes my Shelly BLU Wall Switch 4, but when it asks me to press a button on the device, it doesn't find it. I've reset it several times and nothing». There's usually a simple fix, because the fault isn't normally in the device. Let's go step by step.

How it pairs (and why that matters)

The BLU Wall Switch 4 runs on a CR2032 battery and is Bluetooth: on press it emits for a second, the phone detects it, and a Shelly Gateway bridges to the app

The BLU Wall Switch 4 is a battery-powered Bluetooth controller (a CR2032). It carries no mains power. That has a key consequence for pairing: the device only «speaks» for a second when you press a button, and only if the battery has charge. When the app says «press a button on the device», it's waiting for exactly that transmission. If it doesn't arrive, the app can't confirm it — even though it may have «recognized» it earlier in the list from its Bluetooth advertisement.

Why the app doesn't find it on press

Three reasons the BLU Wall Switch 4 won't confirm on press: the battery, a reset that didn't apply, and Bluetooth range

Appearing in the list but failing on press almost always points to one of these three, in order of likelihood:

  • The battery. It ships with a CR2032 fitted, but it may still have a plastic tab or have arrived flat after months in storage. A weak battery is sometimes enough for the device to advertise, but not to transmit on press. It's by far the number-one cause.
  • The reset didn't apply. Factory reset only works right after inserting the battery. If you held the button without pulling and reinserting the battery first, the reset never ran, however many times you tried.
  • The range. During pairing the phone must be very close (under a metre) with Bluetooth and location permissions enabled for the Shelly app (Android needs location to scan over Bluetooth).

How to add it, step by step

Steps to add the BLU Wall Switch 4: fresh battery, proper reset, pair up close, and have the gateway ready

Do it in this order; it's almost always solved in the first two steps:

  1. Fresh battery. Fit a branded CR2032, check the polarity (+ facing up) and that it makes good contact. Don't rule out a battery straight from the blister pack: if the switch has been stored a while, it may be low.
  2. Proper reset. Pull the battery, put it back and, within 30 seconds, press and hold a button for 30 seconds. This is the reset that actually clears previous pairings.
  3. Pair up close. With the phone under a metre away and Bluetooth and location on, go to add a Bluetooth device in the app and press a button when it asks. If it still doesn't appear, try pressing any button four times to open the one-minute pairing window and retry.
  4. Gateway ready. Keep the Shelly BLU Gateway (or another Shelly with the Bluetooth gateway) powered and online so the switch becomes operational and saves its config.

The gateway: what can bridge and what can't

A Wi-Fi-only Gen1 Shelly can't be a Bluetooth gateway; the Shelly BLU Gateway or a Shelly Plus, Gen3 or Pro can, and a scene drives the Shelly Dimmer Gen3

This is where most people get stuck. The BLU Wall Switch 4 needs a mains-powered Bluetooth gateway to work with the app, with scenes and remotely. And not any Shelly will do: a Gen1 device with Wi-Fi only (no Bluetooth) can't bridge the BLU devices. The one that does is the Shelly BLU Gateway (or any Shelly Plus, Gen3 or Pro with the Bluetooth gateway enabled).

The flow ends up like this: the BLU switch sends the press to the gateway, the gateway takes it to the cloud and a scene drives the device you want to control — for example, a Shelly Dimmer Gen3 to dim a light. The switch never talks to that device directly: it always goes through the gateway. Once paired, assigning what each button does is covered in the guide on how to configure the BLU Wall Switch 4 buttons and scenes.

If the dimmer you had is an older, discontinued generation, its current replacement is precisely the Shelly Dimmer Gen3 — no neutral and trailing-edge dimming for LED. For other older models, our discontinued-product equivalents page lists the current substitute for each.

FAQ

The app sees it in the list but won't get past «press a button». What do I do?

Change the battery for a fresh CR2032 first; that's what fails in most cases. If it's still the same, do the proper reset (pull and reinsert the battery, then within 30 s hold a button 30 s) and pair with the phone right next to the switch.

I've reset it many times and nothing changes.

The reset only applies if you do it right after inserting the battery. Pull the battery, put it back, and then hold a button for 30 seconds. If you did it without that prior step, the reset never ran.

Can I use it without any gateway?

To work with the app, with scenes and remotely you need a mains-powered Bluetooth gateway. Without one, the switch emits over Bluetooth but nothing «listens» to those presses permanently.

Will any Shelly work as a gateway?

Not any: it has to be a Shelly with Bluetooth (the BLU Gateway, or a Shelly Plus, Gen3 or Pro). Gen1 devices with Wi-Fi only can't bridge the BLU devices.

What can I dim a light with from the switch?

With a current dimmer like the Shelly Dimmer Gen3: the BLU switch triggers the scene and the Dimmer Gen3 raises or lowers the brightness. It works without a neutral and uses trailing-edge dimming, the right type for LED.

How long does the battery last?

A CR2032 gives around two years of normal use. If the switch fails to transmit, changing it is always the first thing to try.

And if the phone won't detect it at all?

Check that the phone's Bluetooth is on, that the Shelly app has Bluetooth and location permission, and that no other phone or tablet is already connected to the switch hogging it. Restart the phone's Bluetooth and retry the pairing up close.

Summary

  • The BLU Wall Switch 4 is battery-powered and Bluetooth: it only transmits on press, and only if the battery has charge.
  • Cause #1: a flat battery or one with the tab still in. Try a fresh CR2032 before anything else.
  • The reset only works right after inserting the battery (then hold a button for 30 s).
  • The gateway must have Bluetooth: use the BLU Gateway or a Shelly Plus, Gen3 or Pro.
  • To dim a light: the switch triggers a scene on a Shelly Dimmer Gen3.
